The South Moravian Region realizes that maintaining a high quality of life in our region requires, among other things, ensuring quality transportation. Within the Integrated Transport System, we are significantly improving the quality of our bus fleet. Newly acquired buses are in line with the new visual style of the South Moravian Region, featuring red and white colors with a blue logo. The lower part of the vehicles is silver-gray, and the IDS JMK logo is also displayed on the vehicles. Newly acquired trains owned by the South Moravian Region are not an exception.

Moravia Train Units

A long-term project, inspired by knowledge and experiences from abroad. An absolute novelty in railway transport in the Czech Republic. The beginnings can be traced back to the years 2015 and 2016. A total of 6 entities participated in the tender, and 2 applicants, Škoda Transportation and Stadler, submitted final offers. Škoda Transportation emerged as the winner. In 2019, the South Moravian Region ordered a total of 37 units, including 6 two-car units with seating capacity of 146 and 31 four-car units with seating capacity of 333. Subsequently, a supplier selection process took place – a public procurement procedure that culminated in the signing of a contract with Škoda Transportation on December 20, 2019. These units will provide approximately 45% of the services on routes contracted by the region. The South Moravian Region is thus the first region in the Czech Republic to own trains.

For the entire fleet of units, the name Moravia was chosen - named after the first locomotive that arrived in Brno from Vienna on November 11, 1838. Individual units are named after grapevine varieties that can be found in southern Moravia. The design of the units is in colors corresponding to the logo of the South Moravian Region, with an effort to clearly distinguish them from trains operated by other railway carriers in the South Moravian Region.

The basic color scheme was decided by regional office representatives in a survey in the spring of 2020, choosing from four final design proposals. The color arrangement of Moravia is partially inspired by Switzerland and the German state of Baden-Württemberg, with the colors derived from the region's vibrant red color complemented by white and elegant black that visually connects the entire train set. The interior of the units will be of a truly high standard. The color scheme was also used for IDS JMK buses, which you can already encounter in operation.

The selection of seats was interesting - considering COVID measures, we used the facilities of the South Moravian Region Road Maintenance Administration, where Škoda Transportation placed various types of seats from several manufacturers in one of the halls, and an anonymous selection was made by a "committee" composed of representatives of the regional office leadership, including the governor, and employees of the transport department. The Railway Authority granted the South Moravian Region's request and assigned the abbreviation JMK. This abbreviation must be part of the twelve-character alphanumeric vehicle designation. The abbreviation is registered with the European Railway Agency (ERA).

The units are currently in operation with passengers, provided in cooperation with Škoda Transportation by České dráhy (Czech Railways). Specifically, these are five two-car units. The South Moravian Region took over the units after their successful homologation - approval of the units for regular operation by the Railway Authority. The two-car units have been deployed in regular service since the beginning of the 2022/2023 timetable. The trains reach a maximum speed of up to 160 kilometers per hour. Modern units allow for the transport of a large number of bicycles, strollers, and large luggage. This aligns with the trend of cycling tourism in southern Moravia. Consideration has also been given to passengers with reduced mobility, with low-floor boarding, wide aisles, and an accessible toilet.

Thanks to the new units, travel comfort has significantly increased. The units are low-floor, which will be appreciated by people with limited mobility, passengers with strollers, or wheelchair users. They will be able to travel on practically every train. Our Moravia units also offer other advantages - for example, most seats will be equipped with a USB socket and a 230V power outlet. There is free Wi-Fi available in the train. There is also a changing table in the restroom.

Of course, the vehicles are equipped with an entirely new information system, which not only displays upcoming stops but also connecting services and real-time departures from subsequent stops. It also shows transportation disruptions or Integrated Rescue System alerts.

Attention to detail was also a priority in production, such as hooks on seat backrests for hanging clothes or bags, and lift-up armrests that can increase space between passengers. Notable features include the use of completely new seat design, which is surprisingly comfortable, improved mobile signal reception due to new window designs, large central waste bins for waste separation, and seat fastening that simplifies vehicle cleaning.

An absolute novelty is the inclusion of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in each vehicle – a defibrillator that can save the life of passengers during the journey between stations. According to the region's requirements, passengers will have the option of checking in directly on the train. The trains are also equipped with a passenger counting system, which is an essential element for monitoring vehicle occupancy and load. This allows the transport operators to better plan connections and reduce operational costs.

Future Plans

And what are the plans for the future? We are aware that in our region, there are railway lines that are not electrified. Right now, we are exploring possibilities to offer passengers from these areas higher quality and more cost-effective travel options. A wide range of possibilities is opening up!

FIRST PUBLIC PRESENTATION

The first of a total of 37 new trains purchased was officially presented to the public by the South Moravian Region on Sunday, August 28, 2022, in Brno at the main train station. Their production began two years ago. They are a type of electric rail units from Škoda Group. Since it's a tradition to name trains in some way, the South Moravian Region decided on names that clearly belong to southern Moravia. They are grapevine varieties. So, on your way to work, you can now travel in Pálava, Chardonnay, or Merlot, for example.

DEPLOYMENT INTO TEST OPERATION

On September 8 and 9, 2022, passengers in the Tišnov - Židlochovice section had the opportunity to ride the new MORAVIA unit for the first time. We received positive feedback from passengers, both about the interior and exterior of the units. Czech Railways' operational staff also praised the units for their smooth behavior during the ride and excellent dynamic properties. Passengers are satisfied with the new unit, with a particular emphasis on comfort and noise reduction throughout the train. Boarding was made pleasant with wide doors, especially to the low-floor section.

FIRST FOUR-CAR UNIT

The new four-car electric unit Moravia began test operation with passengers. The train departed for the first time on the regular S2 line on January 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. as OS 4714 from Brno to Letovice. In addition, this week, the manufacturer handed over all six short two-car units to the region, which can now be put into permanent operation. Another delivered four-car set was unit 530 004 named Florianka, which arrived in Brno on January 26, 2023.

COMPLETION OF DELIVERY OF ALL UNITS

The ceremonial conclusion of the project "Acquisition of new electric railway units for the South Moravian Region" took place on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the modernized train station in Adamov, with the participation of regional representatives and other guests. The last unit to be delivered was unit 530 027 Merlot, which arrived by the end of June 2023. This unit is not part of the subsidy program from European Union funds. The region purchased it at its own expense after modifying the rail transport concept in the South Moravian Region. The contract price is 192 million Czech crowns (excluding VAT).

Regional Buses

In the newly concluded contracts, the South Moravian Region demanded greater comfort for passengers and drivers while also setting higher ratings for carriers who offered more eco-friendly vehicles. The goal of the South Moravian Region is to operate public transportation in the region as efficiently as possible. If older vehicles are still functional, carriers can continue to use them. Nevertheless, many carriers have voluntarily chosen to renew their vehicle fleets as it proved to be a more economical solution. In addition to comfort and increased safety, the vehicles are mandatory to have strong air conditioning, more space for strollers and wheelchairs, a driver's cabin that is doubled and tinted windows to better protect against summer heat and winter cold. Newly acquired buses comply with the South Moravian Region's new visual style in red and white with a blue logo. The lower part of the vehicles is silver-gray, and they also bear the IDS JMK logo. Newly acquired trains owned by the South Moravian Region are not an exception. The South Moravian Region's management estimates that it will be possible to renew up to a third of the vehicle fleet in the coming years, which is more than 200 buses. All of them will be low-floor and modernly equipped.

The South Moravian Region was the first region in the Czech Republic to introduce hybrid Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses on regional routes into actual operation. These buses are operated by carriers from the ICOM transport group - the companies ČSAD Ústí nad Orlicí and TRADO-BUS. Since February 1, 2021, when the first new bus in the region's colors was introduced, 253 new buses have already been put into operation on IDS routes within a year:

FIRST PRIVATE PRESENTATION

The first private introduction to the bus in new colors took place on December 23, 2020. Representatives of the company KORDIS JMK, a.s., and the manufacturer were clarifying the requirements of the South Moravian Region. Details such as the glass in the driver's cabin, the size of the window for checking travel documents, or the placement of informative pictograms on the vehicle were fine-tuned on-site. The buses were in the colors of the South Moravian Region, without decals and with the classic equipment of IDS JMK, including markers, boards, etc.

FIRST PRESENTATION OF TWO VEHICLES

The first official presentation of vehicles took place on February 1, 2021, at the Central Bus Station Zvonařka. In the presence of representatives of the South Moravian Region, the manufacturer, journalists, and the management of the company KORDIS JMK, two buses, IVECO Crossway LE LINE 12M, were introduced for carriers ČSAD Kyjov and BDS-BUS. The vehicles were already fully equipped, including markers and decals. Thanks to this, the buses could be put into operation immediately.

As part of the delivery of new vehicles for the carrier ČSAD Hodonín, our Technical Service set out on April 29, 2021, for inspection and certification. In Hodonín, in the background of the company ČSAD Hodonín, 17 SOR CN 12 vehicles were waiting, which in the following days set out on their routes to Hodonínsko and Znojemsko. In addition to the standard equipment, the vehicles are enhanced with reversing cameras and electronic course numbers. These vehicles use a different type of ticket validator.

IVECO FOR THE BLANSKO REGION

Since May 1, 2021, passengers in the Blanenska region can encounter 12 new SOR vehicles and IVECO from the new carrier BDS-BUS Velká Bíteš on route 201. The new buses mainly operate on routes 201 and 157. Selected trips are equipped with bike racks for transporting bicycles. As the vehicles were in the garages of the BDS-BUS carrier in Velká Bíteš, it was necessary to transport the vehicles to the Blanenska and Jedovnicka regions one day before the change of carriers. The transfer of the new vehicles took place in great style, and our photographer was also present.

SETRA AND MERCEDES BENZ

ČSAD Ústí nad Orlicí, a member of the ICOM Transport group, has been operating with 55 vehicles since October 1, 2021, including 4 hybrid ones. The remaining 2 new hybrid buses also serve the Rosicka region on route 405, where TRADO-BUS, a member of the ICOM Transport group, took over part of the services starting from February 1, 2022. They are equipped with electro-hydraulic power steering, which allows them to save 8.5 percent of fuel compared to a combustion engine vehicle. The price of one hybrid bus is around 8 million Czech crowns.

MAN A21 Lion's City

In addition to vehicles from brands such as SOR, IVECO, Mercedes, and SETRA, starting from February 1, 2022, city buses of the MAN brand, type A21, have also been newly included. They are mainly deployed on route 48 of the Brno city transport. To ensure the same level of comfort for passengers as they are used to from DPMB buses, these new MAN buses, as well as some buses from the manufacturer IVECO that operate in the city of Brno, are equipped with validators by a different carrier than DPMB for the first time. These validators allow ticket purchase in the same way passengers are used to from other city transport lines, using a bank card.
